Titles and usage vary between companies — one firm's Area Business Manager is another's Area Sales Manager, and some abbreviations carry more than one expansion in common use. Where that is true we have said so rather than pretending the industry is tidier than it is.
Roles and hierarchy
| Term | Meaning |
|---|
| MR | Medical Representative. The field salesperson who calls on doctors, chemists and stockists. The core role the entire field system is built around. |
| PSR | Professional Service Representative, or Pharmaceutical Sales Representative depending on the company. Functionally the same role as MR. |
| TBM | Territory Business Manager. An MR-level or senior-MR-level title used where companies prefer "business" framing over "representative". |
| ASM / ABM | Area Sales Manager / Area Business Manager. The first-line manager, typically responsible for a handful of MRs. Approves tour plans and reviews DCRs. |
| RSM / RBM | Regional Sales Manager / Regional Business Manager. Second-line, responsible for several areas. |
| ZSM | Zonal Sales Manager. Above regional; a zone typically spans several states. |
| NSM | National Sales Manager. Head of the field organisation. |
| FLM / SLM | First Line Manager / Second Line Manager. Generic terms for the ASM and RSM layers, used where titles differ across divisions. |
| PMT | Product Management Team. Marketing function owning brand strategy, promotional inputs and campaign design — the source of what the MR details. |
| KOL | Key Opinion Leader. A doctor whose prescribing influences peers, engaged differently from routine coverage. |
The working day
| Term | Meaning |
|---|
| Call | A face-to-face visit to a doctor or trade customer. Not a phone call — this is the most common misreading by people new to the industry. |
| DCR | Daily Call Report. The MR's daily record of every call made. See the full DCR guide. |
| Detailing | The structured product conversation with a doctor — the core promotional act of the visit. |
| VA | Visual Aid. The detailing aid used in the call, historically printed, increasingly on a tablet or phone. |
| LBL | Leave Behind Literature. Printed material left with the doctor after the call. |
| E-detailing | Digital detailing on a device, with the interaction recorded. See why e-detailing has to work in 90 seconds. |
| HQ | Headquarters. The town an MR is based in and works most days. |
| Ex-HQ / outstation | Working away from the base town, usually with overnight stay and a different travel entitlement. |
| Work-with / joint working | A manager accompanying an MR in the field, for coaching and for direct observation of the territory. |
| Unplanned visit | A call made outside the approved tour plan. Legitimate and common; the question is whether the system records it cleanly. |
| Day open / day close | The start and end markers of a field day in an SFA app, often geo-stamped, which bound attendance and the day's route. |
Planning and coverage
| Term | Meaning |
|---|
| Tour plan | The MR's advance commitment of where they will work each day. See the tour plan guide. |
| MTP | Monthly Tour Plan. This month's plan, submitted in advance for manager approval. |
| STP | Standard Tour Plan. The repeating baseline pattern the territory works to, which the MTP adapts. |
| Beat | A geographic cluster of doctors and outlets covered together in a day. Also called a route or section. |
| Territory | The full geography and customer list assigned to one MR. |
| Doctor grading | Categorising doctors by prescription potential — A/B/C or Core/Important/Others. Coverage targets are computed from grade, which is why stale grading quietly corrupts every coverage number. |
| Frequency / frequency norm | How many times per cycle a doctor of a given grade should be called on. |
| Coverage | The proportion of the assigned doctor list actually called on. "Coverage against target" — grade-wise frequency achieved versus required — is the number that matters; raw call counts are not the same thing. |
| Plan adherence | Planned calls versus actual calls, from MTP against DCR. A diagnostic, not a target — high adherence to an undemanding plan means nothing. |
| Cycle | The monthly rhythm the field force works to: plan, execute, review, close. |
| Missed call | A planned call that did not happen. Tracked to distinguish plan failure from execution failure. |
Trade and distribution
| Term | Meaning |
|---|
| Chemist / retailer | The pharmacy that dispenses to the patient. Also the measurement point for RCPA. |
| Stockist | The regional wholesaler who buys from the company and supplies chemists. The pivot of Indian pharma distribution. |
| Super stockist | An additional wholesale layer above the stockist, used in some geographies and structures. |
| C&F / CNF | Carrying and Forwarding agent. Holds and dispatches company stock on the company's behalf, typically state-wise. |
| Primary sales | Company to stockist. What the company invoices — and therefore what it can see most easily. |
| Secondary sales | Stockist to chemist. Closer to real demand, and much harder to see without stockist data feeds. |
| Tertiary sales | Chemist to patient. The actual consumption, visible only through audit or dispensing data. |
| Stock and sales statement | The periodic statement from a stockist showing opening stock, purchases, sales and closing stock — the basis for secondary sales visibility. |
| Saleable return / expiry | Stock returned in date, versus stock returned expired. Different commercial treatment; a persistent source of trade friction. |
| Breakage | Damaged stock, handled under the company's returns policy. |
Commercial terms
| Term | Meaning |
|---|
| POB | Primary Order Booking — also expanded as Product Order Booking, usage varies. The value of orders booked by the MR. The commercial output number of a field day. |
| PTR | Price to Retailer. The price the chemist pays the stockist. |
| PTS | Price to Stockist. The price the stockist pays the company. |
| MRP | Maximum Retail Price. Printed on the pack; the ceiling the patient pays. |
| Net rate | The effective realised price after schemes and discounts. |
| Scheme | A trade offer — commonly quantity-based, such as additional units free on a purchase quantity. |
| Bonus offer | The free-goods component of a scheme, quoted as a ratio. |
| Target vs achievement | Assigned sales target against actual, the spine of field performance review and incentive. |
| Incentive | Variable pay tied to achievement, and often to coverage or activity qualifiers alongside sales. |
Prescription and market intelligence
| Term | Meaning |
|---|
| RCPA | Retail Chemist Prescription Audit. Recording at the chemist counter what is actually moving — your brand, competitors, volumes, schemes. Close to unique to the subcontinent. See the complete RCPA guide. |
| Rx | Prescription. |
| Molecule | The active pharmaceutical ingredient. Competition is usually molecule-level, with multiple brands of the same molecule. |
| Prescription share | Your share of a doctor's prescriptions in a molecule or therapy area. The real objective of coverage. See how MRs increase prescription share. |
| Conversion | Moving a doctor's prescribing from a competitor brand to yours. |
| Prescription attribution | Tying observed prescriptions back to the individual prescribing doctor, rather than knowing only that a molecule moved in a locality. |
Promotion and compliance
| Term | Meaning |
|---|
| Physician sample | Free product given to a doctor, marked as a free sample not for sale, subject to value limits and record-keeping requirements. |
| Brand reminder | A low-value item carrying brand identity, permitted within a value cap and required to be of use to the practice of medicine. |
| Input | General term for what the PMT supplies the field to promote with — literature, visual aids, samples, reminders. |
| CME | Continuing Medical Education. Educational events for doctors, permitted with transparency conditions. |
| UCPMP | Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices. The Department of Pharmaceuticals code governing pharma marketing conduct in India. See what UCPMP means for field force records. |
| ECPMP | Ethics Committee for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices. The complaint-handling body constituted by industry associations under the code. |
Systems and data
| Term | Meaning |
|---|
| SFA | Sales Force Automation. The software category covering DCR, tour planning, RCPA, samples and expenses. See how to choose a pharma SFA tool and the platform comparison. |
| CRM | Customer Relationship Management. Broader category; in life sciences, often used interchangeably with SFA, though enterprise life-sciences CRM covers medical affairs and content governance that field SFA does not. |
| Geo-tagging | Attaching location to a recorded visit, used to verify that a call happened where and when it was reported. |
| Master data | The doctor, chemist, stockist, territory and product lists the whole system computes against. Migration projects live or die on it. |
| Offline sync | Capturing records with no network and uploading when connectivity returns. Determines whether MRs file live or from memory later. |
